GCSE Revision Planning Guide

GCSE years bring a heavier workload and more formal assessments. A clear revision plan helps your child stay organised, reduce last-minute stress and work steadily towards their target grades.

  • Start with the specification, not the textbook

Each exam board publishes a specification listing every topic that may be assessed. Use it with your child's teacher or tutor to identify priority areas rather than revising blindly.

    • Download the correct board specification for each subject.
    • Highlight topics marked as weaker in school reports.
    • Align revision blocks to upcoming mock and final exam dates.
  • Build a revision timetable that can actually be kept

Short, focused sessions with breaks outperform marathon days. Mix subjects across the week so no single course is neglected for too long.

Include time for sleep, meals and downtime. Sustainable routines support recall better than exhausted cramming.

  • Use past papers purposefully

Complete papers under timed conditions only after core content has been reviewed. Mark honestly, note lost marks by topic and revisit those areas before attempting another full paper.

    • Review mark schemes and examiner reports where available.
    • Track recurring errors — calculation slips, command words, unfinished sections.
    • Discuss what improved between attempts.
  • Support organisation at home

A dedicated revision space, printed timetables and a shared calendar for exam dates reduce friction. Keep materials for each subject together so sessions start quickly.

  • Watch for stress signals

Irritability, poor sleep or avoiding study altogether can mean the plan needs adjusting. Shorter sessions, tutor support or a conversation with school may help.

GCSE revision planning checklist

Use this checklist as a practical starting point. Adapt it to your child's age, school and current goals.

  • List all subjects, boards and exam dates in one place.
  • Identify three priority topics per subject to revisit first.
  • Create a weekly timetable with realistic session lengths.
  • Schedule past-paper practice after content review, not before.
  • Build in rest, meals and one full rest evening each week.
  • Review the plan fortnightly and adjust based on mock results.
